Success is a Slow Horse.
(17:02) I’m sat in the stalls of Theatre 2. Seat H2. The band are just about ready to run through some tracks having completed a thorough soundcheck. 5 musicians, each playing upwards of 5 instruments each. Saxophones, violins, synths, acoustic guitars, electric guitars, drum pads, drum kits, flutes and on and on and on. It’s magic. I can’t wait to hear it all come together.
I’ve cooked a vegan, black bean, chilli type dish. It’s been in the slow cooker since 11 this morning. Get them fed and watered ahead of the performance. Incredibly, we have sold every ticket bar one. And there’s nothing to say that ticket doesn’t sell between now and doors. It’s incredible as the band are top-tier-niche. Playing soundtrack and score music from the films of a prominent yet indie film director. The fact that 142 people in our little town are down to check it out and get involved, very cool.
Last night I made it to the art exhibition. It felt like community. Felt like something I should be leaning into. It’s a small town, it would be easy to judge what goes on here against the capital city, just a train-ride away. But we are not that, and nor should we try to be. We shouldn’t shy away from what we have and who we are. These are my neighbours, this is our town. People pushed concert flyers into my hands, even the business card or a young poet/rapper. Lean in, appreciate, and accept.
(now 22:59) The show is over, I headed to the club for a pint and then drove home. It was a great night of live music. Bums on seats, watching what was, at times, quite progressive music. Not sure what the general ticket buyer will have made of it. But I for one, loved it. Feel proud for bringing this kind of event to the town.
Had that old familiar urge to pick some up and take it alongside a pint. I didn’t do it. That was a different time.
Sat in the kitchen now, having a beer and watching the rugby highlights. England won against the All Black. Gutted I missed it, I would have been on the edge of my seat had I been able to catch it.
